This is an unusual
painting in that it was very spontaneous and largely
unplanned.Ordinarily, I have a pretty good idea of what is going to
happen during the course of a project. This one, however, took on a
life of it's own and more and more details that needed to be worked
in kept occurring to me as I went, including changing Jim's pose
three times, until I hit the exact right one. I wasn't consciously
aware of all the elements that really are in it until I was done. I
see the bloody red sun of phantastic L.A., the side of the dawn, the
night dividing the day, the scream of the butterfly, the West, the
beauty of Jim as he wanders in Eternity. I couldn't possibly have
thought of this all ahead of time, and several times while I was
working I thought the composition would suffer because I kept
thinking of more things to add to it, but somehow, it held together,
and so here it is. It is 12" x 16", acrylic on canvas.
